Dorset Under-17s emerged from an uncertain start to win their last two matches and finish in a healthy mid-table spot in their first season in the Second Division of the ECB County Youth Championships, writes Mike Vimpany.Newly promoted as Third Division champions last year, Dorset lost their opening two matches against Hertfordshire and Oxfordshire. But, after their match against Hampshire at the Rose Bowl had been abandoned through rain, Dorset's batsmen came good and set up consecutive wins over Essex and Suffolk.Weymouth's Dan Belt and Paul Tweddle, the North Perrot batsman, who both made Minor Counties Championship debuts this summer, caught the eye with useful contributions. Poole's Richard Armstrong made runs in virtually every match, while Sherborne's Charlie Esson and Wimborne's Mark House produced some useful opening partnerships.Poole Grammar School all-rounder Eric Linge was arguably the pick of the Dorset bowlers. Results -Hertfordshire 317 Dorset 151 (Eric Linge 52, Richard Armstrong 45) and 201-5 (Charlie Esson 74, Mark House 50, James Park 30).
